I believe that every city has its own personality, and in some way, it influences how we behave, interact, and experience our daily lives. The urban environment can shape a community, fostering opportunities for connection, health, and growth. A city can contribute to a healthier, more vibrant, and interactive society through its design and the way its people engage with it.

With that said, my roots and values are deeply connected to where I grew up. Mérida, Venezuela, is a city that exemplifies these principles. Known as “La Ciudad de Los Caballeros,” Mérida has always been recognized as the cleanest city, with a highest quality of life and the best amount of green space per person. The university and cultural scene have played a major role in shaping our identity; Mérida is often described as “una universidad con una ciudad por dentro” (a university with a city inside it). Although it is not a major economic hub like other Venezuelan cities with oil wealth, Mérida's economy is rooted in agriculture, institutions, and tourism, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds who share the same values. The city has thrived through its vibrant culture and pursuit of knowledge. Mérida is the only city in the country with a metropolitan public transportation system serving over 500,000 people, and the second in Venezuela to have such a system. Its thoughtful urban planning, beautiful natural surroundings, and lively community have deeply influenced my perspective on the importance of sustainable, community-focused development.

Now that I call Houston my home, I am committed to applying the values I have learned in Mérida, such as community, sustainability, and thoughtful planning, while embracing the unique characteristics of Houston. I aim to contribute to shaping a city that is inclusive, resilient, and dynamic, one that brings out the best in each of us and creates opportunities for everyone to thrive.

Texas A&M and MLPD program

The MLPD program has expanded and strengthened my foundation in design and land development. With a bachelor’s degree in architecture and experience in land development, I found that this program perfectly aligned with my goals. It provided me with in-depth knowledge of various areas related to land development, including impacts, entitlements, feasibility, and the development process. The program has been a valuable experience, not only for the academic growth but also because I had the opportunity to meet wonderful people from diverse backgrounds and places.

One of the most valuable aspects of the program is how it connected me to Aggie values and ethics. Every class and instructor emphasized the importance of understanding how land development can impact people's lives and communities. They also stressed the responsibility of doing things the right way. This perspective is something I am very grateful for and deeply connected to.
